"It's just...I'm not really used to others being nice, as I said before. And thank you for the offer.", she said in a softer tone. Was her life really so different that their personalities were so peculiar to each other? She smiled fleetingly again.

"No problem," he said, as they approached the caves. "You can have the cave next to mine," he said, turning his nose to the second-largest cave, right next to his own. "And if you need anything, anything at all, let me know, okay?" he offered, his eyes warm as they looked into hers, the evening light reflecting dimly.

She nodded, not trusting herself to speak."Good night.", she said softly, and turned into her cave, disappearing into the darkness. As she lay down, she wondered about the day and the new kindness. Her mind was swirling with these unsolved questions as she fell asleep, her white heart on her black chest shining in a ray of light.

Taj yawned hugely, and walked into his cave, curling up to keep out the cold breeze. It was chilly, but not quite cold; still enough to cause him to shiver once. He fell into a deep sleep, dreaming about the mysterious, beautiful female that had wandered into his land. He almost felt guilty about finding her attractive, after so recently losing his mate and family.

Xena woke up, startled, from one of her many recurring nightmares of her former life. It was, like what she usually woke up at, not even dawn. Yawning quietly, she stood up, stretching. Treading lightly to not to wake up Taj, she trotted out of the cave. It was so odd to think of this as a permanent home, yet comforting at the same time. Sitting down on an edge that overlooked several other caves, she was content to watch the sun rise.

Taj rolled restlessly in his sleep, whimpering. In his dreams, his ex mate was slipping away, her life draining. He'd loved her so, the dreams haunted him. He started awake, shaking his head and sneezing, trying to get the dream out of his mind. He noticed that it was barely dawn, and he sighed, debating on whether or not to leave his warm cave or not.

A soft sneeze interupted her thoughts, and she smiled. "Good morning.", she called out softly, and stood up, shaking herself to get rid of the morning stiffness that had settled in once again, from her sitting still for so long. Xena hoped the other wolf had a good sleep, and again it bothered her that she even had thought of this.

Taj smiled when he heard that Xena was awake. He stood, stretching and yawning hugely, before trotting out to where she stood. "Good morning to you, too. Sleep well?" he asked, a little more than politely curious.

Xena answered, "I had a flashback of my life with my old pack, so not really." she laughed a little, though there was no humor in it. "What about you?" she asked, then sat down again.

Taj sat, facing her, his eyes hard as they recalled the memory his dreams had been. "Not really. I had a bad dream, also," he murmured, trying to push the thoughts away; he didn't want them to put him in a sad mood. He wanted to be happy, since Xena was a really interesting wolf, and he finally had a friend. He wasn't alone anymore.

She smiled softly. "Guess that makes two.", she replied. It seemed like a good night's sleep had changed her completely. She felt like she could trust this wolf, which, odd enough, was a first. Xena felt safe where she was.

"So...." Taj said to break the sudden, intense silence, that was unwanted pressure on his ears. "Can I ask why you were in such bad shape yesterday, when you wandered in here? You don't have to tell me, if you don't want to, but I was simply curious. You looked so terrible...." This morning, there was definately some marked improvement in her; her fur was a bit better looking, not as messy and untamable, her eyes were brighter, and she even smiled occasionally. She didn't looked as ragged as she had before, which was a good thing.

She hesitated, stiffening. "As I think I've said, I was running. I've had a hard past...my father, which is the Alpha in the pack I was in, was cruel, especially to me. He said I looked like my mother too much. He beat me every day, never feeding me. I had to fend for myself. My sister though, my father never laid a hand on her. She was his future mate in the future, or so he would call her..." here she stopped for a second, shivering as she remembered the cold nights being forced roughly, her cries gone unheeded by the other pack members. Xena's former life was one of pain and misery, nothing else, never stopping."There were times where I wished I were dead. Then, a few days ago, my father and the pack went relocating to another place, leaving me close to dead. I caught a few vultures that had come near me, mistaking me for a carcass, and I was strong enough to travel after that. It was a long struggle, but I finally escaped. I heard that he came back for me to put me in more pain, but he found me gone. You have no idea how great it is to be gone from there." she finished off, then looked at Taj shyly. "What about your past? Was it better?" she sorely hoped that it was, for she couldn't stand it if he had been beaten like she was too. It would be too much.

Taj listened to her story with horror, his face sad as he heard about her past, anger hitting him as he heard about her father. But he didn't speak, until she asked about his past. "Well.... It wasn't like yours, but it's not exactly happy. Up until a few months ago, I had a decent life. I was in a pack, though not Alpha or Beta. I had a mate, but we'd only been together for about 2 weeks. And then...." He paused, trying to figure out how to describe what happened next. "These huge creatures, without fur, with peach-colored faces, came, and they killed my whole pack, my mate, my family, my friends.... I escaped, because I was out hunting. But I came back, and saw that they were killing everyone. My mate looked at me, pleading to me to run. So I did. And.... Well, I haven't looked back since then." The pain in his voice was too faint to notice, and a smile was actually on his face. "I guess this is sort of a new beginning for both of us, huh?"

Her face contorted in horror as he told his story. "Did you find out what those..things, what they were? That must be horrible, I'm so sorry to hear that." she replied, trying to understand how he would have handled that. She wouldn't have cared if that had happened to her pack, but she could imagine a benevolent wolf pack being murdered, and shivered. However, she smiled slightly too. "Yeah, I guess so."
